Sea Safe information and updates on the Sea Safe marine distress tracking system for boats.

Continued from Boat Safety main page...

sea_safe_tracking_boatplaceThe system is a based on a coded radio frequency signal which allows for pin-point location accuracy as well as exceptional signal transmission ranges. The system is affordable and allows for search and rescues to be undertaken at the time and place they occur without waiting for a response from national or international Search & Rescue authorities. Use of the system ensures that prospective issues associated with normal S & R procedures such as delays in response and inaccurate tracking and location techniques are overcome. Saving time saves lives. The Seasafe system has particular value in the recreational dive charter industry as well as yachting and all recreational and commercial boating and fishing industries. Very often yachtsmen and commercial fishermen operate outside National and International Search & Rescue authority boundaries.

Seasafe now provides the opportunity to undertake immediate rescues as a first line of response and without 100% reliance on conventional authorities and methods. Generally, in cold or shark infested waters, rescues need to be effected within a maximum one hour window. The importance of the ability to respond to non-critical and critical alarms at vessel level without invoking a national response should be highlighted and never underestimated. Seasafe is a 'Radio Frequency' transmission and receiving system operating on a specific dedicated frequency. Seasafe is independent of and does not rely on multiple orbits by appropriate satellite systems.

The Seasafe personal transmitter is constructed of polycarbonate material and is resistant to shock, UV, most solvents and moisture. The Seasafe Personal Dive transmitter is rated for use to a depth of 40 metres. Seasafe complies with relevant Australian and New Zealand standards and is also CE approved. The system comprises the following components: A personal transmitter or radio beacon which is worn conveniently on the body. This transmitter may be manually activated or automatically activated when a person falls in the water. A receiver which is connected to an antenna and may be mounted on a boat or in a land base station (such as Coast Guard). An 'omni-directional' antenna which is connected to the receiver and receives a distress signal from any Seasafe transmitter within 360 degrees and activates an audible alarm on the receiver. This antenna is permanently mounted on the vessel or on an antenna tower at a base station. A fold-up directional antenna. This is connected to the receiver after and alarm signal has been received. This antenna provides an indication of the direction from which a distress signal has been received. By following this direction, the victim's location will be identified.

When a Seasafe personal transmitter is activated within range of a Seasafe receiver, an alarm is sounded within the receiver. At this point the receiver is switched to 'search' mode and the directional tracking antennae is coupled to the receiver. The direction of the person in distress is highlighted through both a visual and an audible signal strength indicator. By simply following the direction of the strongest signal, the victim is quickly located and recovered. Any number of transmitters may be activated simultaneously and the system will systematically track all victims starting with the closest and ending with that person who is furthest away. Any number of vessels with a Seasafe receiver on board can assist in a search.

The receiver also has an in-built contact output which will close when an alarm is activated on the receiver. This output contact may be connected to any number of devices on the boat such as engine cut-out, flashing light, klaxon or even the MOB input of a GPS. Seasafe is designed to compliment and supplement existing technologies and the intention is not to attempt to replace these technologies. Seasafe may be used in any marine or land based pursuit whereby a person may become lost, disorientated or in need of assistance.
