An ABP Means Safer Boating
Before buying a new boat, make sure that it has an Australian Builders Plate (ABP) affixed. NMSC CEO Margie O'Tarpey explained that the NMSC helped to develop the Australian Builders Plate with government and industry. "The ABP requirements are aimed at preventing accidents due to overloading and excessive engine power, as well as ensuring that smaller boats won't sink if they capsize or become swamped. "The ABP includes information on the number of people and load allowed on a boat, engine rating and weight."
The latest statistics from the NMSC's National Incident Database, show that 311 people have died in recreational boating incidents since the Year 2000. The most common incidents that led to a fatality were collisions, person overboard, swamping and sinking. In a break-through for safety, the ABP requires new boats less than 6 metres to have either level or basic flotation. Basic flotation means that the boat will float in some capacity in the event of swamping or capsize. This may allow you to cling onto the boat whilst awaiting help. Level flotation means that the boat will float in a level position if swamped. This will allow you to remain in the boat and possibly bail out the water whilst awaiting help.
