COLUMN ON BOAT SECURITY FROM SHIP TO SHORE P6
boat081A modern alarm control panel will also report battery levels, its inputs will advise if water levels rise, if pumps are activated and its outputs will activate a range of electrical functions such as turn on lights, refrigerators etc. If fitted, your GPS will confirm coordinates/track movements so control can follow and aid recovery. Control will advise, by the list of numbers you provide, just what’s happening and keep you informed.

The list of options is long and extensive and equal to the vast array of different vessels out there, Jet Ski’s to multi million dollar cruisers. Solar panels are an excellent option on smaller boats/ski’s as often the power supply is marginal to start with and any draw on the ships battery is too much. Therefore a low input panel is perfect and ensures connection and power at all times. Most optional devices we offer use very little power on stand by but, with often weeks rather than hours, if we think about our home alarm, between checks, a boost is essential.

Fitting is simple and can be done by any reasonable person or if your not confident or don’t have time a marine electronics firm can fit it in a few hours. I supply fully set up ready to plug and play systems but wiring is not complex so apart from programming it’s a breeze to install. Most devices are wireless which helps reduce installation times and remote arm/disarm fobs makes operation easy. My control room also has options to arm on behalf of owners who think they may have forgotten turn it on.

I urge all boat owners to think about protection and to save insurance premiums by fitting a good quality alarm system. Club Marine are very happy to talk savings, they provided data on losses which were staggering and if even half were prevented then they, and the owners, would be happy chappies.

I’m always available if you need help or just want to discuss your special needs, nine times out of ten we have a solution and its affordable and reliable, try www.shiptoshore.com.au and/or call the contact number and let’s chat.

With tough times ahead and work and money scarce, thieves will be more active, they have to earn their income and I don’t want you on their shopping list. My feeling is that easy to remove goodies such as fish finders, radios and tackle will be prime targets, so break ins will rise and boat thefts will run at a little higher rate than in the past. Don’t be a victim, get some form of protection, do it soon.

Thanks to Boatplace for the chance to pass this information on and to share my experience with you, keep safe, and happy boating, all the best.

Security Tips

Research Alarm Systems. Lots out there to choose from - take a look.

Keep 2 sets of Keys. But don't leave them anywhere obvious or on the boat at all if you can help it.

Visibility always keep possessions out of sight on a boat. Out of sight, out of mind is true. Even fishing rods and cheap items invite theft.
