Over time marine growth can build up to a point where it can cause expensive or irreparable damage to the rollers and brackets that secure the pontoon in place. Barnacle Guard Pylon Protectors were developed to prevent costly, time consuming maintenance and to keep pontoons and marinas looking their best. They are easily fitted to new or existing pylons, and are powered by tidal movement, currents and passing boats. This drives them to gently sponge the pylon between low and high tide, effectively keeping it free of growth across the average tidal range.
Since switching focus to Marinas in early 2009, Barnacle Guard has fitted Pylon Protectors to every pylon at Northbridge Marina, in Sydney, with two more marinas booked in for installation quite soon. A further 5 marinas are currently trailing the product, and two are planning to purchase after their redevelopment is complete. Overseas interest has also been attracted as a result of Barnacle Guards exhibit at the Marinas 2009 Conference and Exhibition.
Each marina varies in size, staff and the way it is managed. Pylon Protectors not only ensure the smooth tidal movement of floating pontoons, but also frees staff and resources which can be allocated to more important tasks Barnacle Guard are currently offering marinas a three month trial, for more info call 1300 559 169.

Marine Sanitation is a section for information on equipment and methods adopted by marinas and ports in the treatment and disposal of sewage and waste products.![]()
Continued from Marinas & Ports![]()
The heavy-duty Dockside Discharge Unit pumps sewerage directly from a vessel into the sewer in only three minutes, followed by a complete flush and rinse for clean, safe disposal. The Portable Toilet Emptying Unit caters for the needs of light recreational vessels and is also suitable for use caravan parks and popular camping sites. It allows for quick and easy disposal of waste from a portable toilet, and the three varying models include rinse facilities for portable toilet tanks and complete internal cleaning facilities for the unit after each use.
Director of Marine Sanitation, John Collier believes that demand for these products will only continue to grow as the marine industry becomes more environmentally astute. "As a marina operator, providing an efficient, effective, and easy-to-use sewerage disposal service demonstrates a commitment to social and environmental responsibility, a quality that is increasingly sought out in today's society." "The units, available in either manual or token operation, feature an easy to maintain wash down facility to protect the amenity of users, and backflow protection to prevention any contamination to the clean water supply."
What sets these products apart from the competition is the quality of fittings and practical design. The Dockside Discharge Units use a helical rotor pump, as opposed to the widely used diaphragm pump. This allows a greater amount of sewerage to be pumped over a greater distance, a valuable benefit for a busy marina. Each unit is housed in a heavy duty marine grade 316 Stainless Steel cabinet with an attractive fine brushed finish and is light enough to enable installation on a floating marina. "I am confident that these high quality Australian made products will rival those currently available and all are covered by a 12 month warranty and come with specialist advice on installation, use and maintenance."

Pacific Harbour Marina latest news and information.![]()
Continued from Marinas & Ports![]()
The weather protected waters of Pumicestone Passage World Heritage Marine Park, provide for a 'cruise when you choose' boating lifestyle, providing more days on the water. "The fact that Bribie has no treacherous bars to cross means quick and direct ocean access without being at the mercy of the tides. This is a unique attribute compared to many other parts of the coast," said Marina Manager, Michael Bourke.
With the first stage complete, 82 single and multihull berths in sizes up to 18m have been made available for rent, and a limited number for sale. "Considering the quality boating available in the area, these present as the best value berths on the coast" said Michael. The largest berth available has already been snapped up, as residents in the area become the first to take advantage of the new facility. Located within an hours drive of Brisbane and the airports, all boaties will find it an equally special and convenient location.
This facility further enhances Pacific Harbour as one of the most enviable boating bases on the coast, with Moreton Bay right on the doorstep. Pacific Harbour Marina is part of a $1.8 billion master-planned canal and golf community on Bribie Island. Boating visitors have access to Queensland's number one ranked golf course and the superb facilities at the Golf and Country Club including fine dining, tennis courts, pool, gym, day spa, and steam room.
Pacific Harbour is part of Star Marinas Group that includes Coffs Harbour International Marina and Tin Can Bay Marina. "Each Marina is located in an iconic destination for both land and sea experiences", said Warren Russell, Star Marinas Operations Manager. Each location has something special for recreational and commercial boating and now has a range of berths available for purchase or rent. Pacific Harbour offers 30km of 4WD beaches, a wealth of camping sites, and National Park walking tracks to suit all fitness levels. The passage itself, set against the backdrop of the Glass House Mountains, includes a 6,000ha Marine Park, wrecks, dugongs, turtles, picnic areas and a multitude of crabbing spots, (although their exact locations are more guarded.)
Notably, the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron (RQYS) has planned to make the Marina its northern base for sports fishing, including a weighing station for Billfish Competitions. The Marina facility includes showers and restrooms, laundry, car park, wireless internet access, a holding tank pump-out facility, security access control, and a short-term berthing jetty. A comprehensive maintenance and refueling facility is situated nearby allowing patrons to have all the services they require conveniently located, without those facilities detracting from the peacefulness of the Marina Village.
Future stages for Pacific Harbour will see an entertainment and retail precinct, gated villas and waterfront apartments. Specialty stores earmarked for the Marina Village include a mini-market/deli, bakery, news agency, bottle shop, hairdresser and cinema. Waterfront restaurants, cafes and bars will have the marina buzzing with both boaties and locals onboard for rest and relaxation.
Star Marinas offer a new brand of marina service. Offering a sea change in the marina business, Star Marinas has committed itself to delivering boaties professional management and modern facilities, spliced with old-fashioned friendly service and a thorough local knowledge. Tin Can Bay recently awarded a 'Certificate of Excellence' in the Marina of the Year Awards by the Marina Industries Association of Australia - the only Queensland Marina to achieve this accolade. Star Marinas provides boaties with incentives and the flexibility to use credit between the three marinas. "Star Marinas have raised the bar in marina construction, management and sales," said Warren. "We have already had a very positive response from the boating community".

You wouldn't let marine growth take over your boat's hull, so why let it destroy your pontoon? Barnacle Guard's Pylon Protectors are an Australian invention, designed to prevent barnacles, oysters and other marine growth attaching to the pylons at marinas and on pontoons Marine growth not only looks and smells unpleasant at low tide, but there is also a risk of damage to moored vessels, by sharp shells, which can also be a safety concern for anyone nearby.
