BSW-1000 Bilge Switch ![]()
Smartswitch's SmartBilge is a breath of fresh air for the ever annoying broken bilge switches that have been far to long on the market, without a suitable competitive solution. These guys from the deep dark depths of the South in New Zealand have put a lot of effort into this bit of kit, making sure that it adheres to the Keep It Simple Stupid Rule and the results have done them proud.
It basically is a protected cylindrical float that once the bilge water level raises to the unit it floats and shuts the circuit, just as every other switch on the market does!! . But the difference here is the way these guys have developed the switch and its protective housing to prevent jamming etc. Not only does the unit have the appeal of its protected ever reliable float, but on a whole its a small unit, at 64mm wide by 60 mm wide and a mere 30 deep, it can be easily installed into the most difficult of bilges or the most accessed of bilges, where previously installed units were broken by those goodies hidden under the soles.
The unit also comes with an optional control panel with a built in and adjustable timer to stop those annoying pulse pump start ups that keep you awake when the smallest amounts of water activates the pump. It also has the Programmable delay off, so as the pump runs for a preset but adjustable 5 seconds after the float has be returned to its normal state, so as to clear the extra water from the position of the switch to the bottom of the pump. Speaking of the pump the unit alone can control a 40 amp pump. The unit's constant current draw is a mere 13 milliamps with its reverse polarity protected.
The control head has the Auto-bilge monitor, a manual over-ride, one minute pump run time alarm and a high water alarm. The solid state controller should be installed high and dry, as any safety control or monitoring device should be. Plus only a plonker wouldn't keep his bilges clean of shaving etc. Better go check mine now! All in all this is one bit of kit that you should keep in mind. I loved its simplicity and compact design when I looked at it and I knew it had the majority of bases covered in the world of bilge monitoring. I just cant think of the ones they have not covered.
